Kalabagh to divide
country: Nasim Wali Lahore - President Awami National
Party NWFP Begum Nasim Wali Khan while speaking
on the book launching ceremony of Javed Hasmi’s
book Mein Baaghi Hoon appreciated the fact that
a diverse leadership had gathered to mark the
occasion. She said previously other
provinces used to produce rebels but she was
feeling proud because Punjab also created a
rebel. She commented that in the
country’s political history, the three-year
movement of the PNA (Pakistan National Alliance)
was the greatest movement that had leaders like
the late Mufti Mehmood and Nawabzada. She said
that country again needed such leaders to get
rid of the present regime. She
regretted that Pakistan’s political history was
full of same sad episodes of military
interventions. She commented that the situation
was like the game of ‘Stairs and Snakes’, where
the snake pushes you back to the old
position. Begum Nasim Wali mentioned
that she knew Hashmi when he used to be a
student leader from the IJT
platform. She stressed that the Punjab
had the greater responsibility to make the
country prosperous. She said Balochistan was in
great trouble while dead bodies of Pakistanis
soldiers and civilians were coming from the
tribal areas of the NWFP. She regretted
that the government didn’t have the
farsightedness to see things for the small
provinces. Commenting on General Musharraf’s
statement, she agreed that it was not 1970 and
added that it could turn out to be worse than
that because the people were far more
resourceful than the 70s and the country had
become a pile of gunpowder. She said in
the past, the majority (East Pakistan) got
separation, now it could be the minority. She
said the three provinces were being pitched
against the Punjab. Begum Nasim Wali remarked
that she was aware that the common people of the
Punjab beyond Lahore were suffering, but the
civil and military bureaucracy was the root
cause of the problem. Referring to the
political tradition, she said for the first time
the Muslim League did not serve as a sunflower,
going after the power, rather it resisted. She
said she respected those leaders of the PML-N
who remained loyal to their party in its
difficult time. She regretted that
certain forces had decided to break Pakistan and
the Punjab should do more to make sure nothing
happens to the solidarity of the
country. She told the gathering that
General Musharraf was all set to announce the
construction of the Kala Bagh Dam very soon,
which would imply the division of the
country. She said Pakistan could not
afford experiments any more because already
different systems had been used here and it had
become a laboratory of dictatorship. She said
leaders like Mufti Mehmood, Noorani, and Ghaus
Bux Bizanjo had signed the constitution but
unfortunately that constitution was never
allowed to be implemented. She said
another movement was imminent because breach of
the constitution could not continue for a long
time. She also remarked that in Pakistan’s
history one movement ends at a martial law and
warned that now there was no Yahya Khan or
Ghulam Ishaq Khan to take over. She
said it was a strange phenomenon that anybody
who is nationalist is dubbed as a traitor. She
urged that the smaller provinces should be given
more opportunity. She said that she had seen
both pre-Independence and post-Independence
periods, but unfortunately the country did not
see real democracy. She questioned if a
watchman plunders the house, what would happen.
Referring to the construction of Kala Bagh Dam,
she warned that we should learn from the past
mistakes.
